An inverter can fulfill various functions. There is always one or more in your system. Typically, it converts direct current from your solar panels into alternating current for your home appliances. It can also convert alternating current from the grid into direct current to charge your batteries.

 

If your house is equipped for a 3-phase system, you need 3 inverters that work together to supply power. Some owners already have 1 or more inverters that only supply alternating current to the grid. Depending on your choice of batteries, an inverter that can charge the batteries must be purchased.

Purchasing the inverter is an important decision as all the power you will use will be supplied through these inverters. They must be reliable and able to handle your power peaks. They must make your power so reliable that computer equipment works fine on it. If your electricity supplier has a fault, they must switch to power from the batteries without you or your equipment noticing.
